About Travertine
Travertine is a sedimentary rock which is formed by the transformation of limestone. It mainly consists of, calcite and gypsum. In pure form its colourless however often appears gold, brown, cream, tan or yellow due to minor impurities and organic pigments.
Visually travertine varies considerably, filled, honed, brushed, chipped, tumbled and polished. Travertine also has another characteristic…. holes. Due to gas bubbles during the formation of the stone, once cut into tiles the holes left become visible. They can vary from small pinholes to large irregular holes. Depending on the style of Travertine you have the holes can be factory filled with epoxy resin and polished or honed, others get filled with grout at installation stage or they can be left unfilled.

What We Do
Deep Clean
As with everything we do protecting your surrounding furniture, flooring and possessions is of upmost importance. As all work is carried out by myself and Nicola, we can ensure you get 100% attention to detail.
Our first step is to start to remove the surface dirt, so we pre-treat your floor with our specialist solutions allowing them to dwell on your floor, this will allow the solutions deep into grout joints and exposed voids.
Following this we agitate the solutions into your floor, we use a combination of machines including a rotary, contra rotating brush machine and our specialist tile master machine. Each machine has a separate job to deal with every eventuality on your floor. This step gets the solutions deep into those problematic grout joints, also removing all surface dirt, grease and marks.
Next, we need to remove the solutions and suspended dirt from your floor. To do this we use our van mounted extraction machine to rinse the solutions off your floor, taking all the dirt with it. We can rinse your floor at up to 600 – 700psi of pressure without making as much as a splash. This also neutralises your floor with the added use of heat to sanitise.
We often repeated the agitation and rinsing process, this is to use different agitation machines to combat different areas of your floor, along with using different solutions, again to deal with any other problematic areas, for example grease next to the cooker, or engrained dirt where your wellies sit to dry!
We then fully dry your floor, speed drying with fans where necessary. Your floor is now ready for filling, polishing, honing or sealing depending on the options chosen or required.
Travertine is a popular versatile Natural Stone, filled and honed or polished, floors and wall tiles, Kitchen or Bathroom, it’s a contemporary choice for all scenarios.
Filling Holes and Cracks
As mentioned Travertine can be a very holy stone. Often, we find holes created by footwear or furniture, some appear in time with wear, it’s also common to find the odd crack, normally across doorways. We can fill these cracks with our stone filler, it’s a mastic made of polyester resins which is possible to polish in line with the desired shine on your floor and should prevent further damage, and dirt ingress into the holes. It’s not an invisible repair but will at least stop dirt getting in and accentuating these voids.
Polishing and Honing
When required with the use of diamond encrusted pads and weighted machines, it’s possible to polish or hone your Travertine. If your floor is looking dull, scratched, or looks etched, or even if you just want a higher sheen, or even a matt finish, this is next process to achieve your desired finish.
All Travertines act differently, whilst some will take a high sheen, others are designed to have a matt or honed look. This is one of the many reasons why we always trial floors first to determine your options, and what the possible results will be.
We can produce a natural sheen using diamond encrusted pads on a weighted rotary machine to achieve a polished look. Similar to the effects of sandpaper on wood, we have to work through 4-5 levels of grit pads to firstly remove scratches with coarse pads, then build up the sheen gradually with each stage to achieve the desired results.
If a honed finish is more to your liking, we can offer this too. In a similar way to polishing we use different grit pads to leave a smooth matt looking finish ready to be sealed.
Travertine Sealing
Travertine is extremely porous, sealing is vital following deep cleaning. Left unsealed will allow liquid spills and even dirty mop water to penetrate and potentially permanently stain your floor. Sealing will also help with your ongoing maintenance.
We use premium impregnating seals that provided the correct cleaning procedures are carried out can last up to 5 years in a domestic environment. Being an impregnating sealer it sits just below the surface of the stone to give a natural look to the floor. Using an active compound resin that becomes part of the stone, your tiles and grout are protected from dirt, grime and daily food spills with an invisible and breathable barrier.
Sealing Benefits:
- Gives excellent protection against both oil and water based stains
- Laboratory certified as Safe for food preparation areas and worktops
- Protects and seals both indoor and outdoor surfaces
- Easy to apply and Ready to USE
- Does not change the appearance of most surface types
- Aids maintenance and makes it easy to clean your floor
